Prevention Works In Seattle

What You Can Do

Effective youth drug abuse prevention involves people from throughout the community who do a variety of activities promoting positive youth development.  Contact the Prevention WINS coordinator for more information about any of the opportunities for involvement listed below.

Are you a parent?  Visit the Parenting Tips & Tools page to find out how you can help your child make healthy choices.

Help us find out if retailers sell alcohol to minors.  Are you 21 or older but look younger?  Volunteers are needed to conduct alcohol purchase surveys in northeast Seattle.  Click here for a volunteer job description and application.

Start conversations on our Facebook page.  The coalition's Facebook page is one way parents can connect with one another and share information.  Use your social media savvy and post conversation starters.

Help student prevention clubs with their activities.   Prevention clubs at Eckstein Middle School and our local high schools are conducting student surveys, developing awareness campaigns, and planning for fun, drug-free events.  If you are available at lunchtime or immediately after school ends, they could use your help.

Fund transportation for youth to attend trainings and events. Every year, students are invited to participate in statewide events in Yakima and in Grand Mound.  While some coalition and community funding is available, student groups need money to pay for transportation to the events.

Attend a Prevention WINS coalition meeting.  Coalitions like Prevention WINS have been successful in reducing youth substance abuse rates in their communities.  Check out the coalition calendar for meeting dates and times.

 Enter data.
Evaluation of prevention strategies and activities is vital if we are to continue to address community drug and alcohol problems effectively.  Volunteers to enter survey data are needed towards the end of the school year.
